INAUGURAL FLOYD TREVIS MEMORIAL ON TAP FOR WESTERN PA SPEEDWEEK VISIT TO SHARON SPEEDWAY

May 18, 2026 (Columbus, OH)…The Schaeffer’s Specialized Lubricants Western PA Speedweek presented by J.S. Bova Excavating is excited to partner with Sharon Speedway to introduce the inaugural running of the Floyd Trevis Memorial as the marquee event of Western PA Speedweek. The $5,000 to-win special for the popular “410” Sprint Car miniseries is slated for Saturday, May 30th with a strong field of cars expected to be on hand.

As a great addition to the celebration of Floyd Trevis’s accomplishments, one of his original sprint cars will be on display before and during the event behind the speedway grandstands. Tom Burkey of western Ohio, a longtime racing enthusiast, car owner and sponsor, also has a hobby of preserving history. He has done just that with one of the early Trevis Craft cars. In his possession is a restored car that was originally built in 1968 and raced by none other than Lou Blaney in 1969.

Working out of his home garage in Youngstown, Ohio, the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame member is known for his efforts and success in sprint car racing as well as his achievements at the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Focusing first on his ties to sprint car racing, Floyd can be described as one of the fathers of the modern-day sprint car. The first two mounts were built in 1963, with one going to each of Lou Blaney and Dean Mast. Of the countless wins that were captured in the “Trevis Craft” sprint cars, none were more remarkable than those of the Bob Weikert owned #29 and driver Kenny Weld. By way of their 1971 built Trevis chassis, the duo won a total of 146 features including the Knoxville Nationals and Williams Grove National Open in consecutive years (1972 & 1973). Other notable drivers to sport a Trevis Craft on track include Dave Blaney, Larry Dickson, Ray Tilley, Gus Linder, Ralph Quarterson, Mitch Smith, Kenny & Greg Weld, Smokey Snellbaker, Lynn Paxton, Dick Tobias, Joe Saldana, Jan Opperman, Keith Kauffman, Gary Bettenhausen, Paul Pitzer, Lee Osborne and Billy Cassella.

As influential as Floyd Trevis’s designs were in sprint car racing, his decades-long exploits at the historic Indianapolis Motor may supersede that. He is routinely credited with entering into competition one of the most unusual and unique that the Indianapolis 500 has ever seen. His first appearance as an owner and builder came in 1946 when Trevis arrived with a car that utilized two supercharged 91-cubic inch midget engines, effectively giving the car four-wheel drive. After spending years as both an owner, chassis builder and chief mechanic, decades of design and development finally culminated in a Trevis-built car winning the Indianapolis 500 in 1961 with A.J. Foyt behind the wheel.

Coupled with Floyd Trevis’s career achievements is his direct ties to the current ownership of Sharon Speedway. As mentioned previously, one of the first two cars built went to local sensation Lou Blaney, whose son Dave Blaney is now a part owner of Sharon Speedway following an illustrious career in sprint cars that eventually led to a path in NASCAR. Dave also sported a Trevis Craft at the track early on in his racing career. Lou Blaney’s grandson Ryan, recognized as a NASCAR standout in his own right, also signed on recently as a part owner of the Hartford, OH oval.

Not to be outdone, the final piece of the Sharon Speedway triumvirate also has interesting ties to the Trevis chassis. Local businessman and racer Will Thomas recently joined the Sharon Speedway ownership group as well, and his father Bill Thomas fielded race cars for years, which at one time included a Trevis Craft design. One of the most successful cars out of the Bill Thomas/Crash Brothers stable was affectionately dubbed the “CMT Special”.

The highly anticipated Floyd Trevis Memorial highlights a quickly approaching Western PA Speedweek. The feature purse includes a speedweek high $5,000 winner’s share and $400 just to start the main event. Additional awards and contingencies will be doled out as well with a full listing of the purse and prizes shown below.

The Saturday, May 30th event will mark the fifth visit to Sharon Speedway by Western PA Speedweek. Past winners include Ryan Smith (’21 & ’24), A.J. Flick (’22) and Dave Blaney (’23). Mother Nature was victorious in 2025 as the race was cancelled due to rain and unseasonably cold temperatures.
