Shippenville, PA (May 31st, 2023) – Twenty-five cars packed the pits at Knox Raceway in Knox, PA on a night that marked the third consecutive running of Western PA Speedweek following a 20 year hiatus. In an almost mirror image of the FAST series race at Knox just two and a half weeks ago, Brandon Spithaler walked away with the $3,000 win on the fast 1/3rd mile oval.
Based on early results in and around the region, it was inarguable that Brandon Spithaler would be among the favorites upon entry into the first round of Western PA Speedweek at the revived Knox Raceway. Once it became evident early in the night that the track would have some character, it became even more clear that the Evans City, PA driver could be considered the standalone odds-on favorite.
As feature time rolled around with 24 cars taking the green flag, it was Dan Kuriger who jumped to the point from his pole starting position. A first lap caution for Sye Lynch, who spun to a stop in Turn #1 after making contact with another car, quickly reset the field for a second attempt at going green. Kuriger again grabbed the holeshot with George Hobaugh, Michael Bauer, Spithaler and Mark Smith closely behind. However action was quickly halted again on with one lap in the books when Darin Gallagher found himself flipping wildly off the topside of the track. Gallagher was reported to be okay, though the same couldn’t be said for his #12 machine.
After returning to green, Brandon Spithaler quickly moved past George Hobaugh to claim the second position, and immediately set his sights on the race leader. After a slicing and dicing through lapped traffic, with a couple failed attempts at overtaking the lead, Spithaler finally snuck under Kuriger right at the line as the cross-flags were being given on Lap 13.
From there, it was no looking back for Brandon Spithaler as his lead over the Rochester, PA driver (Kuriger) increased seemingly every lap. When the dust finally settled after Lap 25, Spithaler found himself well over half a lap ahead of the rest of the field, with the win officially clocking in at a 10.729-second gap ahead of the 2nd place Kuriger. Michael Bauer, Mark Smith, and Ryan Smith completed the rest of the top five.
Bradley Howard claimed the $200 ‘Rustler Sales & Service Hard Charger’ award with a net gain of eight spots. This becomes even more impressive when considering that Howard was penalized to the rear of the field after stopping on the track and requiring a second push-off. The penalty spots were not included in his passing total.
Michael Bauer was awarded the $250 ‘Knox Bakery Fast Qualifier’ award after setting quick time over the 25-car field with a fast lap of 13.707 seconds.
Darin Gallagher, Mark Smith and Ryan Smith were the Mobile Bail Bonds heat race winners.
Brandon Spithaler also earned an extra $100 as part of the Lockhart ‘Jackpot Award’ for being the highest finishing driver displaying the Lockhart Raceway decals.
Darin Gallagher was awarded the $50 hard luck after flipping out of the feature after one completed lap while running in the ninth position.
During pre-race festivities, Ryan Smith was randomly drawn for the Hoosier Tire certificate, and Bill Jones, Jr received a new gas can from title sponsor Mark McIver from Schaeffer’s Specialized Lubricants.
Teams, fans and officials will now turn their attention to Round #2 of Western PA Speedweek on Thursday night, June 1st at Dirt’s Monster Half-Mile known as Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway for another $3,000 to win affair. Pit gates open at 4pm, with the driver’s meeting slated for 6:15pm with practice, qualifying and racing to follow.

Shippenville, PA (Mar 13th, 2023) – Less than one week removed from the initial release of the 2023 Scheaeffer’s Specialized Lubricants Western PA Speedweek presented by J.S. The revised speedweek point fund features increases to positions second, third and fourth in the weekly rundown.

“A lot of work was done to spread the wealth this offseason between increased pay back through the field, in both the nightly purse as well as our originally posted point fund. As a group we are extremely excited to be offering a more evenly distributed point fund across the top five positions, and hopefully it create a little extra incentive for some teams to commit to chasing the coveted Western PA Speedweek crown,” said speedweek director Tyler Beichner. “A special thank you goes out to every single one of our sponsors and supporters for continuing to step up and make this possible.”
The countdown is officially on with less than 80 days (79 to be exact) until the 2023 iteration kicks off at the recently revived Knox Raceway. One word comes to mind when evaluating this year’s five-race schedule: variety. Contrasting styles will be required each night to claim a spot near the front; from the flat one-third mile in Knox to the high-banked Monster Half-Mile in Pittsburgh…from there drivers will look to master the usually cushion-pounding Lernerville Speedway, the synonymously slick Sharon Speedway, and the hammer-down half-mile Tri City Raceway Park. The mixed schedule of track types is guaranteed to keep drivers on their toes, and produce some of the best racing action fans will see all summer!

Tire Rule Announced for Western PA Speedweek
Shippenville, PA (Mar 2nd, 2023) – In collaboration with area tracks, Western PA Speedweek competitors are required to have Hoosier tires on all four corners of the car. Drivers will be permitted to run the 2022 season Hoosier rear tires H12, H15, and medium tires as well as this year’s new Hoosier rear tires D12A, D15A, and medium tires. Western PA Speedweek officials have deemed this necessary given the timing of the new season’s tire announcement coupled with the potential for weather to affect a significant portion of the early-season “burn-off” period being allowed at local tracks.
Other stated rules include the following:
- Weight
- All racecars must weigh a minimum of 1425 pounds with a driver fully prepared to compete in the car through an entire event.
- Wings
- A standard maximum size of 25 sq. feet.
- Both the top wing and nose wing can contain a maximum 2″ wicker bill located at the rear edge of the center foil.
- Dished wings are NOT permitted. The center foil top is to be flat from front to back and side to side.
- Tires
- Hoosier tires required on all four corners.
- 2022 permitted rear tires (H12, H15, and medium) plus the new 2023 rear tires (D12A, D15A, and medium)
- Safety
- Drivers must comply with each individual track’s required minimum safety designations. Please consult with the various speedways for any questions pertaining to safety requirements for that event.

Western PA Speedweek Returning to Its Roots; Increased Purse Awaits
Shippenville, PA (Dec 6th, 2022) – Back and better than ever, Western PA Speedweek is OFFICIALLY returning in 2023 for a third consecutive summer. Next year’s iteration will also mark the 11th running in history, including the original eight-year stint from 1993-2000. Western Pennsylvania’s top drivers will again battle it out against a strong contingent of invaders for five straight nights in pursuit of the coveted speedweek title. In other exciting news, both Schaeffer’s Specialized Lubricants and J.S. Bova Excavating will return as title sponsors for the third straight year!
This year’s five race schedule will assume what has become its customary place on the calendar, commencing the week following Memorial Day on Wednesday, May 31st and continuing through to the finale on Sunday, June 4th. The popular group qualifying format that drivers and fans have become familiar with over the past two years will again be utilized. Without further ado, here is the 2023 Schaeffer’s Specialized Lubricants Western PA Speedweek presented by J.S. Bova Excavating schedule:
2023 Speedweek Schedule
May 31st | Knox Raceway |
June 1st | Pittsburgh’s PA Motor Speedway |
June 2nd | Lernerville Speedway |
June 3rd | Sharon Speedway |
June 4th | Tri City Raceway Park |
As time rolls on in life, we realize that many things remain the same. That sentiment couldn’t be truer here as evidenced by the fact that three tracks from the original speedweek slate will once again be featured on the 2023 schedule in Knox Raceway (formerly Sportsman’s Speedway), Pittsburgh’s PA Motor Speedway and Lernerville Speedway. Not to be outdone, Tri City Raceway Park (formerly Tri-City Speedway) has been the Sunday night home of Western PA Speedweek since the 1996 edition. That’s a remarkable level of nostalgia, and we have yet to touch on Sharon Speedway who themselves have been running continuously since 1929, a remarkable feat that can be matched by few across the nation.
In this day and age it’s a promoter’s duty to lower the cost of racing as much as possible. While fuel prices have skyrocketed over the last two years with seemingly no end in sight, one of the biggest attractions of the 2023 Western PA Speedweek slate is the limited amount of travel needed to compete in all five nights of action. From beginning to end, a round trip to all five tracks requires less than 300 total miles of travel, again making Western PA Speedweek one of the most affordable miniseries in the country to follow.
The success of the two previous years has also paved the way for yet another nightly purse increase. All five events will present a matching $15,000 feature purse, accentuated by a year-to-year pay increase for Pos. 3-12 in the nightly finishing order. “We’re extremely grateful for the unending support of the five host tracks, and thankful for their willingness to step up and foster the growth that Western PA Speedweek has experienced in such a short amount of time,” said director Tyler Beichner. “We struggled a bit with where to allocate the extra purse money, but from the outset our goal has been to positively affect the highest number of teams possible and I feel we’ve accomplished that.”
2023 Speedweek Purse
1st | $3,000 |
2nd | $1,500 |
3rd | $1,200 |
4th | $1,000 |
5th | $800 |
6th | $700 |
7th | $600 |
8th | $550 |
9th | $500 |
10th | $450 |
11th | $420 |
12th | $400 |
13th | $370 |
14th | $360 |
15th | $350 |
16th | $340 |
17th | $330 |
18th | $320 |
19th | $310 |
20th-24th | $300 |
Tow | $100 |
Though details have yet to be finalized, the 2023 Western PA Speedweek point fund expects to at least match what was paid out in 2022. Last summer’s champion earned $3,000 with the full breakdown looking like this: 1. $3000, 2. $2000, 3. $1500, 4. $1000, 5. $800, 6-10. $500
Beyond the purse increase and point fund monies, bonus money will again be up for grabs in 2023 to highlight a handful of different awards. Though it’s early in the process and we hope to accrue more great awards, the following are already penciled in and will be in full effect next summer.
- Quick time award – min. $200 each night
- Hard charger award – min. $200 each night
- Hard luck award – min. $50 each night
- Warrior award – $500 to the week-long hard charger
Just like we experienced in the 2021 reboot, the first two shows of the 2022 Western PA Sprint Speedweek were unfortunately lost to rain and severe thunderstorms. A picture perfect three days were then on tap for Friday, Saturday and Sunday that saw a total of 42 different drivers compete in the events at Lernerville Speedway, Sharon Speedway and Tri City Raceway Park. Western Pennsylvania standout and Apollo native A.J. Flick was dominant on his way to a clean sweep, capturing all three $3,000 victories and the matching $3,000 points championship.
Fans can gather more information about each speedway by visiting their track website and social media platforms, or by contacting their individual track offices.

Overnight Rains and Early Afternoon Storm Forces Round #2 Cancellation at Pittsburgh
Shippenville, PA (June 2, 2022) – Heavy overnight rains combined with a strong storm that passed over the track just before 2:00pm ET doused any hopes of completing Round #2 of Western PA Speedweek at Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway. Tonight’s event has been canceled and will not be made up.
The rains and overall wet weather have delayed what was a hopeful return of Western PA Speedweek to Dirt’s Monster Half-Mile for the first time since 2000. “There was a lot of excitement from racers, fans, sponsors, and PPMS staff building around this event,” said promoter Matt Miley. “The ancient Miley Motor Sports team was energized, ready for this to be a premier Thursday night Western PA Sprint Speedweek event. It’s extremely disappointing that Mother Nature has claimed both of the mid-week shows.” The half-mile speedway will return to action again on Saturday, June 18th with the Falconi’s Moon Township Automotive ‘410 Sprints’ once again in action along with other support divisions.
A much improved forecast appears set to welcome Western PA Speedweek for our weekend visits at Lernerville Speedway, Sharon Speedway, and Tri City Raceway Park. All three shows will pay $3,000 to-win, $300 to start. Additionally, the full Speedweek points fund is still in effect with the champion earning an impressive $3,000 for their efforts. The nightly Quick Time and Hard Charger awards have now both increased with the money dispersed across the completed events. The Hoosier Tire loyalty program giveaway and the nightly $50 Hard Luck award will continue the remaining three nights as well.

Shippenville, PA (Apr 12th, 2022) – As everyone eagerly awaits the start of the local racing season, Schaeffer’s Specialized Lubricants Western PA Speedweek presented by J.S. Bova Excavating is excited to welcome Pittsburgh’s PA Motor Speedway (PPMS) to the 2022 speedweek circuit!
Located just to the west of the city in Imperial, PA, the sprawling half-mile oval owned and operated by Miley Motorsports has stepped up to the plate to fill the void on Thursday, June 2nd. Following a recent announcement that Thunder Mountain Speedway would be unable to open this coming season due to unexpected work commitments, it was a no-brainer where to turn to next as Western PA Speedweek staff aimed to fill out the five-race schedule.
“With Pittsburgh’s PA Motor Speedway, you get more than you could ask for” said Speedweek director Tyler Beichner. “Beyond a track that traditionally produces phenomenal racing night in and night out, we get to incorporate a facility that has shaped local and regional racing for over three decades. We couldn’t be more thrilled to partner with PPMS for Round #2 of Western PA Speedweek, or more thankful to the entire Miley family for joining us in this endeavor on such short notice.”
Pittsburgh’s PA Motor Speedway was built and opened in 1979, and just ten years later the speedway was purchased by the Miley family in 1989. As they say, the rest is history. Through thick and thin, the Mileys have continually operated the track since that day over 33 years ago. And although PPMS has mainly been associated with late model racing over the years, they’ve jumped at the opportunity to host the ‘410 Sprint Cars’ at every chance they got.
Now, PPMS returns to the Western PA Speedweek family after serving as the Saturday night host for all eight years of the previous speedweek foray that ran from 1993-2000. Bobby Allen, Ed Lynch Jr (x2), Joey Saldana, Dale Blaney, Lance Dewease, and Kenny Jacobs were the winners of those completed races.
In a surprise twist, mid-week sprint car racing is not entirely new to the 1/2-mile speed factory. Just five years ago in the summer of 2017, PPMS hosted a rare Monday night race for the All Star Circuit of Champions as a rain makeup date for a previously postponed event. Tony Stewart was the first to the checkers that evening to claim the hard-fought win in a race that saw more than a handful of lead changes. Now we ask – who will be the next sprint car driver to lay claim to a mid-week feature victory!? With just seven weeks remaining until speedweek commences, we won’t be waiting much longer to find out.

2022 Speedweek Point Fund and Bonus Award Details Released
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Shippenville, PA (Mar 2nd, 2022) – Fresh off of last year’s speedweek rebirth, the 2022 Schaeffer’s Specialized Lubricants Western PA Sprint Speedweek presented by J.S. Bova Excavating has upped the ante for the second consecutive year. It was previously announced that our nightly feature purse will see an extra $2,000 injected throughout the field, raising the total nightly offering to $14,000.
Furthermore, an impressive $11,000 in point fund money will be distributed across the Top 10 positions, with another $3,000 on tap to reward the fastest qualifier, hard charger, and hard luck drivers of the week. When combined with our increased feature purses, over $84,000 will be up for grabs during the five-night miniseries scheduled for June 1st-5th!
“The endless support from drivers, fans and our partners following last year’s successful reboot was simply overwhelming,” stated speedweek director Tyler Beichner. “Everyone involved has taken notice, and I think that reflects in the packages and prize offerings that we’ve been so blessed and fortunate enough to lay out for the upcoming 2022 Speedweek. I can’t thank all of our partners enough, and this truly is a testament to their love and dedication for our sport.”
The top ten drivers with perfect Speedweek attendance will share an $11,000 point fund with a cool $3,000 going to the champion.
